My Living Van

Living vans are like caravans, but usually more heavily built to withstand commercial use. This one was built by Cheshire County Council around 1955, it stands nine feet high and is about ten feet long, and weighs about a ton. There is a small brass plaque inside which says

Roads and Bridges Dept
DIST.no.3
NO.210/17

If anyone knows exactly what these numbers refer to, I would like to hear from you.

Living van

Ex Cheshire County Council Living van and 1955. 86" Landrover.

I fitted out the interior in traditional style. It has a small, coal fired stove, a rather "cramped" toilet compartment, it's lit by paraffin lamps, and It will sleep 4 in bunks.

The "chassis" is made of wood and bolted to the top of the semi elliptic springs,
The roof consists of six curved cross beams of 2"x2" Ash steamed to shape, covered with T&G boards, and finished with roofing felt glued and nailed down.
I've started drawing some plans showing it's simple construction which may be of use to anyone building or rebuilding a similar van. Van construction page

The whole van was in a very sorry state when I got it, I must have had to replaced about 75% of the wood work, I think it was worth it. It has a sort of character , not found in mobile aluminium box type vans ! ,

And below.. the interior and cooking stove

The interior paint work may look white in the picture below, but it isn't. I did some research, and found the correct colour for the interior of living vans appears to be called "Nicotine Cream" I had to mix some myself (from white with a bit of yellow and brown) as nobody seems to stock this shade.
